Ebook About
In 1998, Graydon Hazenberg, his sisters and their partners set off on a youthful quest. Seduced by the romance of the loftiest peaks on earth and a road claimed to be the world’s highest, they pedalled out of Islamabad, Pakistan headed for Tibet’s holiest mountain, the pilgrimage site of Mt. Kailash. Had they known how hard it would be on their equipment, their bodies and their willpower, they might have thought twice.Calling themselves the Xtreme Dorks, the five cyclists pedalled, pushed and hiked their way around, over and through the world’s highest mountain ranges. For three months they persevered despite a frequent lack of food or anything resembling a real road. They followed in the footsteps of previous pilgrims, explorers and mountaineers, passing through remote valleys and wind-scoured plateaux. Along the way they had the privilege of meeting members of some of the cultures that call the Roof of the World home: the Pakhtuns of the Northwest Frontier; the Kalash people of Chitral; the Baltis living around K2; the longlived Hunzakut; the Kyrgyz, Tajiks and Uighurs of western Xinjiang; and the dokpa nomadic herders inhabiting western Tibet. It was not a straightforward journey. Plagued by frequent equipment failures, recurrent illness, abysmal road conditions and efforts by the Chinese Public Security Bureau to stop them cycling to Tibet, it required real determination to keep the pedals turning in the direction of Kailash. Initial exuberance gradually acquired some of the resolve shown by hardy Tibetan and Hindu pilgrims as the Dorks approached the far-off mountain with glacial slowness. Even once they had reached Kailash and nearby Lake Manasarovar, their troubles were not over, as their onward travel by vehicle towards Lhasa proved every bit as challenging as cycling had been.Graydon Hazenberg has taken the account of this long-ago pilgrimage and brought it to life in the present, interweaving it with stories of the history and culture of the places encountered along the way. The result is a compelling tale that will entertain seasoned adventurers, cycle tourists, history buffs and armchair travellers of all descriptions. As John Keay, the distinguished British writer of numerous books about the Indian subcontinent’s history, says of Pedalling to Kailash, “It was a brutal marathon, but it makes for an engrossing read.”

Book Pedalling to Kailash: Cycling Adventures and Misadventures Across the Roof of the World Review :

Graydon Hazenbert will inspired you with this tale of mad adventure. It is a tale of a man loving every minute of life, even while in pain and frustration (of which there seemed to be much!). There is nothing more important in life that being satisfied with whatever adventure you are on. The trick is making your life an adventure. This story did not make me wish I was there but with every word and every turn of events you knew that this crazy trip was right where Graydon wanted to be. It was a page turner and a way for me to travel to this area of the world, I could skip over to my Google maps and learn about a place I had never been. Interestingly it also made me ponder my crazy adventure of a life - I am sure people peek into my word and say why would she bother doing all that? The point driven home by this story is that if you LOVE what you are doing it is amazing! This is a tale of 5 hearty soles making a trek that I would NEVER want to make. But boy did they put their heart and sole into it. I was very happy to sit back and enjoy the ride from my couch in my suburb with my electric bike charging in my garage!
Peddaling to Kailash is one of those hard to put down travelogues that stays with you long after you have finished it. From Pakistan to Tibet, Hazenberg brings to life the history, culture, and landscape of a fascinating yet little visited part of Asia. He writes with such humor and clarity that at times you feel like you are member of the cycling group and are just as worried about those stone-throwing kids, PSB agents, and broken bike spokes. When they finally ( improbably) make it to Kailash, you feel like you did as well!Hazenberg and his cycling team completed this trip in the summer of 1998 prior to the war in Afghanistan and the totalitarian repressions in Xinjiang. In that regard, this book serves as a worthy successor to many of the previous travelogues he references throughout the book (Fleming, Shaw, Younghusband, etc.) as it captures a time and place that is sadly now a distance memory. Additionally, as he notes, this was at the time before e-mail fully took off and smart phones did not exist, so from a technological standpoint, it marks an end of an era.Highly recommended for those interested in Inner Asia, the Silk Road, cycling, adventure, or just a darn good read.
