Ebook About
When you travel to a foreign land, do you experience this new place as your old self? Or do you become a new version of you? From living in a van in San Diego to growing chocolate with indigenous tribes in Central America, to teaching in the Middle East and volunteering in Africa, Gregory V. Diehl has spent his entire adult life discovering the world and himself. Leaving his California home shortly after his 18th birthday, he went on to live and work in 45 countries across the globe by age 28.By recounting the existential lessons from his journey, Diehl challenges the reader to question how their identity has been shaped by the culture and lifestyle they know. He argues, compellingly, that travel can transform your perception of yourself along with the world. By losing your comfortable sense of self, you learn to examine your life through the structure of everything it can become. To travel solo with a truly open mind is to forget who you were when you started. It is to be constantly born anew, to discover your strengths and find your path in life. Travel As Transformation will give you the wisdom, the inspiration, and the resources to conquer the limitations placed by your arbitrary past. Whether traveler or non-traveler, its lessons about approaching the uncomfortable and unfamiliar apply to everyone.

Book Travel as Transformation: Conquer the Limits of Culture to Discover Your Own Identity Review :

I'm afraid I have to agree with the other one and two star reviews. I don't understand the great reviews of this book and I'm beginning to think any book can get 4 or 4.5 stars no matter how badly it's written. This reads like he is lecturing, and the lecture has no structure. He rambles on about various topics and there's no point of having different chapters because each chapter is just a collection of ramblings in kind of a stream of thought style, jumping around from topic to topic without a theme. He doesn't really tell stories about his experiences or give enough autobiographical information to give it human interest or make you feel a connection to him. Instead he sounds like he is trying to give a series of lessons. The author is quite young and it's obvious, as he lacks a certain sophistocation or understanding about the world, which is a particularly bad trait for someone who is trying to present himself as a guru about the world. And on top of it all, I find it boring, and find I read a page and don't know what it said because my mind wandered because I'm bored. So I gave up after reading about half the book. I feel bad for writing a negative review but I suggest people save their time and money. I will note that I have traveled quite a bit and maybe someone who hasn't would get something out of this book that feels like common knowledge to me.
Having continuously traveled for nearly a decade, I can see that the author has not only walked the path, but taken time to stop, look around, smell the roses, then crouch, grab a chunk of the underlying earth, and ask: "What is this made of, and how did it cause these beautiful roses?"Unconventional, yet very valuable at the personal level, it's full of helpful insights that can serve to help you in truly getting more out of your travels, by orienting you to look for the somewhat hidden, but much more meaningful treasure of travel: how it changes you as a person. This book came out well after I had begun my journey of perpetual travel. Suffice it to say that having read it earlier in my journey would have definitely shortcut my path to some of the deeply personal lessons that came from traveling, by virtue of knowing where to look. All in all, it provides a useful perspective for travelers young and old, vagrant and experienced alike, on how to accelerate and deepen the inner benefits afforded by the opportunity of travel.I would recommend the book to any (current/soon to be) travelers who are interested in personal development, as a way to discover shortcuts for how to utilize & leverage travel itself as catalyst for personal growth.
