I Am a Brave Bridge is a marvelous, romance-filled story of a seventeen-year-old girl/woman coming of age while encountering for the first time the culture of the cherished homeland of her family. It is a highly personal story written through the eyes and heart of the budding young author, but it also gives a vivid picture of a considerable slice of the society of the homeland she encounters for the first time. The homeland in question is Slovakia, the little-known portion of Czechoslovakia that became a separate country on January 1st of 1993. I myself am an immigrant from Slovakia, so I read Sarah’s narrative with extra fascination. I was astonished that a love story that is light-hearted and often told almost tongue-in-cheek also contains brief but penetrating insights into Slovak history, chilling vignettes of life under Communism, and a vivid picture of what it was actually like to live in Slovakia in the 1990s. All these elements are blended in a marvelous way and spiced deliciously with the apt use of the occasional, evocative Slovak word. Read I Am a Brave Bridge. You will relish it! As someone who knows what it feels like to never quite "belong" in a place or culture, this book is a breath of fresh air. I love the insights into Slovak culture (something I knew almost nothing about before reading), the love story, and the writing—but most of all I love the way in which Sarah makes peace with herself and discovers what it means to come home, even if you don't have a place that can rightfully be called that.
